My idea is to create a photo collage, containing only pictures that were taken on the
UNM campus on a given, yet arbitrary day. Photos can be submitted by anyone, as long
as they were taken on campus on the specified date. All the pictures submitted are to
be included in the collage, so long as they are not offensive and the participant has not
already submitted more than 10 pictures.
The movie “Life in a Day”, directed by Kevin Macdonald, inspired me to start this project.
It is compiled of a series of video clips, selected from 80,000 submitted videos from
all over the world. The clips were all to be recorded on the same day: July 24, 2010.
Additionally, participants were to answer a few simple questions: What do you love?
What do you fear? What’s in your pocket? Macdonald said that the film focused on a
single day “because a day is the basic temporal building block of human life—wherever
you are,” This movie reminded me of all the different people out there and the different
lives they lead.
One day, after watching the movie, I walked around UNM and watched all the different
people attending our campus and wondered how different (or similar) it may seem
through their perspective, compared to the way I see and understand it. For instance,
their respective school is located on a different side of campus, or they simply have a
different way of looking at the world than I do.
I think that this photo collage project will help fellow Lobos, students and faculty alike,
appreciate the varied perspectives of others and, by doing so, help them feel a sense of
campus community. To see that while other students probably study different subjects,
they are connected by the campus. Maybe someone discovers they share a common
passion for Bruce Nauman’s Center of the Universe; or maybe they are confronted by a
totally new way of looking at the iconic sculpture. By gaining insight into someone else’s
perspective we realize that, whether we have a different way of looking at the world, we
ourselves are not so different and, ultimately, grow as a community.
If this project were to launch, what sort of questions would you like to answer with your
photo submissions? Here are a few questions I was brainstorming: What on campus
do you find beautiful? Where on campus do you spend most of your time? Where on
campus is your favorite spot to hang out? Who or what on campus makes you happy?
How would you prefer to submit your pictures, via email, Tumblr, or Facebook? I would
immensely appreciate your feedback and am looking forward to your pictures!
