As a 20-something white girl, I’m sort of an expert on getting white girl wasted, trying to get out of responsibility and making lip synching videos on YouTube. Let me share that wisdom with you, so your quality of life can vastly improve, girl. Let’s get this started. First tip.
1. Consume Pop Culture
Don’t discriminate. Listen to Taylor Swift songs with your car windows rolled down, watch the entirety of Gossip Girl in a month and a half during a particularly painful breakup, and don’t feel bad for following all of the Pretty Little Liars on Instagram. How else are you going to follow the story of Ashley Benson’s haircut? Consume pop culture to your heart’s content. Find joy in the absurdities of the N*Sync reunion but also find tragedy in how ridiculously problematic “Blurred Lines” is. So many things rhyme with “hug me.”
As a 20-something girl, pop culture often talks down to you, pats you on the head and calls you silly for wanting that coral shade of Revlon lip stain seconds after having advertised it to you. This column* suggests you enjoy pop culture with a fine mixture of irony and sincerity while recognizing and making fun of its flaws. There’s no reason you, as a 20-something, should limit yourself from participating in the immense fun of pop culture. You are not too good for pop culture. You’re young, after all.
After a while of performing this step, you might find yourself awake at 3 A.M. worrying about Gaga’s weight “issue” or whether Lena Dunham even considers herself a feminist. I get it, these are the issues of our generation, but lady, go to sleep, the chickens are gonna be out soon. Don’t let pop culture consume your life so much that you can’t function, and if you do, just start a blog about it.
