You know what really grinds my gears?
As a fellow Facebook/ Twitter/ social media user, I am constantly coming across tons of different grammar mistakes that drive me crazy! And yes I’ll admit, sometimes I make my own grammar mistakes (mostly because Twitter doesn’t allow more than 140 characters…but also because everyone makes mistakes). I can tolerate the occasional substitution of the letter “u” for “you” or “r” for “are.” However, what REALLY grinds my gears is when people cannot/ do not use the proper “your” or “there.” THERE IS A DIFFERENCE and this is basic stuff we learn in elementary school…COME ON PEOPLE! Okay, yes we’ve all had the occasional slip but when people are constantly making the same mistake…it’s no longer a mistake. It’s pure ignorance.
Another pet peeve of mine is when people purposefully spell words wrong. And again, I’ve been guilty of this back when I was in middle school (oh, the Myspace days…). HOWEVER I don’t see the point of people spelling “me” as “mehh” or “homegirl” as “homegurl.” This is bad because first of all, future employers are going to be looking at your social media pages, and if they see you spelling like a first grader, their perception of you isn’t going to be the best. Secondly, you will look back at your horribly spelt Facebook statuses 5 years from now and cringe at how stupid you looked (true story).
Finally, one of my biggest issues with bad grammar is when people say “I seen” something. NO. NO. NO. STOP. You do not say “I seen that girl at the store,” you say “I HAVE seen that girl at the store” or better yet, “I SAW that girl at the store.” Using the wrong tenses does not make you sound cute…jus’ sayin’.
I know I sound completely condescending and mean talking about this topic, but I really just want to educate people on the importance of proper grammar use. Yes, it is your own profile and yes, you can do/ say/ write whatever/ however you want, but just remember that your bad grammar will come back to haunt you. And I speak from experience!
