You may have opened my article as you usually do to find my ‘gems’ of advice, but this week since it is my last column for the semester, I decided to change it up a little bit. First, I wanted to thank anyone who took the time to read my editorials this semester. It’s deeply appreciated and I hope you enjoyed them! When I joined Bound this semester, I had a hard time finding something I wanted to write about for an editorial. I finally came up with the idea of an advice column because I’m usually the type of person who gives great advice, but NEVER follows it. Take my first advice column for example (here’s the link if you missed it, http://bound.unm.edu/2014/02/10/gellys-gems-advice/). A single girl asked a question on how to not be a miserable single person in the midst of friends who are all in relationships. I gave some pretty great advice on how to just be yourself, live your life, and mostly to love yourself. I still struggle myself with that concept, and had found myself not following my own advice. Recently, I was basically rejected by the guy I had a crush on for 6 months. It’s a long story, but basically, I was torn apart. I definitely wasn’t feeling the self love. I was feeling more of “he doesn’t like me, so why should I like me?”, but then I remembered my very first editorial with Bound, as well as my last when I gave advice on Douchebags and Broken Hearts. I read these to myself over and over again, and it helped. So, hopefully I start taking my own advice and I hope others have found it helpful as well!
I hope you enjoyed Gelly’s Gems of Advice as much as I enjoyed writing them. It was truly one of the highlights of my semester. I hope to continue it next semester!
About the Author:
My name is Angelica Vasquez. I’m a senior at UNM majoring in Elementary Education. I have a passion for teaching and I hope to become a kindergarten teacher in the future. I’m excited to be student teaching at Montezuma Elementary next semester! After I get my bachelor’s here at UNM, I want to get my master’s in early childhood education and a doctorate in educational psychology. My ultimate dream is to live in New York one day!
Gelly is actually my nickname given to me in high school, I changed the J to a G because I “wanted to be different” and the nickname has stuck ever since.
I’m a huge New York Yankees and New Jersey Devils fan. I am definitely one of the crazy sports fans who yells at the tv as if the team could hear her through the screen and take whatever she’s saying to heart. My friends say I have issues, and I kind of agree.
I’m a shy person, you can ask any of my fellow Bound editors and they would probably agree. Even though I’m shy, I like to consider myself friendly. I will talk to you if you talk to me, but I have trouble initiating conversations. So if you ever see me and I just wave and smile awkwardly, don’t take it to offense, I just don’t know what to say.
Some random facts about me are that I love to dance, and my music taste ranges from country to gangster rap. My favorite colors are pink, green, navy blue, and maroon. I am a mix of Puerto Rican, Mexican, Spanish, and Venezuelan. I have an unhealthy obsession with Starbucks and Dance Moms. Reading and writing are my favorite pastimes. I also love to smile! There’s much more but I probably already lost the majority of whoever is reading this, so if there’s anything you want to know, feel free to just ask!
Once again, thank you for reading this column this semester. Have a great rest of the semester and an even better summer! Good luck with finals!
